Um 1900 entstanden in Wien die ersten Eisenbetonbauten. Ihre Skelettkonstruktion ermöglichte weitgespannte Räume mit hoher Traglast und machte innovative Mehrzweckbauten möglich: Wohn- und Geschäftshäuser mit loftartigen Werkstrakten, integrierten Theatern und Kinos, Fabriken - sie waren die Schauplätze eines beschleunigten urbanen Lebens. Das Buch dokumentiert erstmals die bahnbrechende Entwicklung dieser neuen Bautechnologie, umgesetzt von wagemutigen Baumeistern, Ingenieuren, Architekten und entschlossenen Auftraggebern. Rund 90 analysierte Bauten - von bislang unbeachteten Gebäuden bis hin zu Ikonen der Wiener Architektur - illustrieren die räumliche Flexibilität und Bauqualität des Eisenbetons. Vienna’s first reinforced concrete buildings were built around 1900. Their skeleton construction enabled wide-span spaces with high load-bearing capacity and made innovative multi-purpose buildings possible: residential and commercial buildings with loft-like wings, as well as theaters, cinemas, and factories. These were the scenes of accelerated urbanization. This book is the first to document the development of this pioneering building technology, implemented by master builders, designed by engineers and architects, and brought to fruition by determined clients.
