David is returning to his mother's people on the western prairies. Government policies have forced his Blackfoot people onto reserves, and there are troubling laws being enforced. He thinks longingly of Mary, but he's sure their lives are too different despite their love for one another.

Bobby lives in a tiny cottage in a small city deep in the Canadian Rockies. She writes, reads, and, when it's not snowing, rides around on her three-wheeled electric bike.
In summer, she hitches up the vintage camper she renovated and goes to one of the lakes nearby. She named the camper "Calamity Jane."
Calamity Jane is one of her heroes. That sharp-shooting, hard-riding lady once said,
