Taiwan, the Republic of China, has been striving to reform its financial system, and in the process, become a financial power, both regionally within the Pacific Rim of Asia, and, globally, given the rapidly increasing economic and financial significance of this area. BRIAN WALLACE SEMKOW was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute of Fiscal and Monetary Policy, Ministry of Finance, Tokyo, Japan, and a Visiting Scholar at the Faculty of Law, University of Tokyo.
