The Public Health Service has estimated there are 1,100,000 intravenous drug users in the United States, with about 235,000 infected with HIV. Treatment of substance abusers has an extensive and varied history; no consensus has emerged as to which approach works best. GENNARO OTTOMANELLI is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at SUNY Health Science Center and Director of the Division of Drug Dependence at the Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn. Ottomanelli has substantial clinical, research, and administrative experience in chemical dependency. He has written numerous publications in the field including HIV Infection and Intravenous Drug Use (Praeger, 1992).
