Dental surgery known as periodontal surgery is used to prevent or treat abnormalities of the bone, gingiva, or alveolar mucosa that are caused by trauma, development, anatomy, or plaque. Chronic periodontitis is defined as an inflammatory disease of the supporting tissues of teeth caused by groups of specific microorganisms, resulting in progressive destruction of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone with either pocket formation or recession, or both.
