Hommages Roger Bastide, 1976) donne la mesure de la place de la notion de tribu dans le champ des sciences humaines et sociales au Maghreb. Le mot 'tribu' fait partie du langage scientifique courant pour évoquer la société au nord de l'Afrique - mais également dans d'autres régions du monde -, son organisation et son histoire, de l'Antiquité au Temps présent. La notion à laquelle il renvoie demeure toutefois l'enjeu de discussions importantes, sur lequel cet ouvrage propose de jeter un nouveau regard pluridisciplinaire.
Le jeu des relations entre identité individuelle et identité collective, leur mode d'expression et la culture matérielle à laquelle elles renvoient, les rapports entre l'État et la tribu, les liens des tribus au territoire à travers la référence à un terroir et/ou des aires plus étendues, et plus encore les différentes significations du terme selon les contextes envisagés, tels sont les aspects abordés dans ce livre. L'objectif est de proposer une discussion sur la notion de tribu considérée sur la longue durée de l'histoire au Maghreb et au Sahara, afin d'en mesurer au plus près les caractères d'évolution.
The question posed by J. Berque (« What is a North African tribe ? » in L'éventail de l'histoire vivante. Hommage à Lucien Febvre, 1954, and repeated in L'autre et l'ailleurs. Hommages Roger Bastide, 1976) illustrates the importance of the notion of tribe in the human and social sciences in the Maghreb. The word « tribe » is part of everyday scientific language, evoking North African society - but also that of other regions of the world - and its organization and histoiy, from Antiquity to the present day. However, the notion to which it refers remains the subject of much debate, on which this book offers a new, multi-disciplinary perspective.
The book examines the interplay between individual and collective identities, the ways in which they are expressed and the material culture to which they refer, the relationship between the state and the tribe, the links between tribes and territory through reference to a terroir and/or wider areas, and the different meanings of the term in different contexts. The aim is to propose a discussion of the idea of tribe considered over the long historical period in the Maghreb and Sahara in order to measure its shifting characteristics as closely as possible.
