Taoism is, along with Buddhism and Confucianism, one of the three main currents of Chinese thought and religion. More than a religion, Taoism was an ancestral belief system based on the worship of nature and ancestors. Its mythical founder, Lao Tse, "the old master", is considered one of the most important mystics of mankind. Attributed to Lao Tse, the Tao Te King is the fundamental text of Taoism. Richard Wilhelm is undoubtedly the best connoisseur of Chinese spiritual life, its history, its secular wisdom, its marvelous art and its language. Having lived in China for many years, he has translated classical texts such as the I Ching and the Tao Te King. His exposition of the life and philosophy of Lao Tse, as well as that of Confucius and his other works on Chinese history, literature and art, make him the leading authority on these matters.

Richard Wilhelm (10 May 1873 - 2 March 1930) was a German sinologist, theologian and missionary. He lived in China for 25 years, became fluent in spoken and written Chinese, and grew to love and admire the Chinese people. He is best remembered for his translations of philosophical works from Chinese into German that in turn have been translated into other major languages of the world, including English.
