Brain Asymmetry and Neural Systems: Clinical Neuroscience

Clinical neuroscience refers to a subfield of neuroscience which focuses on the scientific study of fundamental mechanisms that underly disorders and diseases of the central nervous system and brain. It aims to develop new methods of conceptualizing and diagnosing such disorders and developing new therapies. The human nervous system is divided into two symmetric halves, but a closer examination of the brain reveals functional and anatomical lateralization. Brain asymmetry is detected in terms of behavior, structure and function. Experiential, evolutionary, genetic, developmental and pathological factors are hypothesized to have a role in this lateralization. Defects in brain asymmetry are linked to a variety of neurological disorders, and certain disorders exacerbate the brain asymmetries.
