After graduating, he leaves for London, where he interacts with a wide range of individuals, both impoverished and from the wealthy class; yet he never fully connects to a meaningful human relationship. Jacob, questioning whether he is a failure, decides to leave London and travels to Greece. Fortunes abroad turn precarious, and he returns to London only to be sent off to the war, where he is killed in action. As E.M. Forester remarked at the publication of Jacob's Room, "A new type of fiction has swum into view." Woolf has created a transformative reading experience conveying the emptiness of one individual's life by leaving out the traditional elements of plot and character, yet she manages to question the ways we fail to see each other as we actually are.

Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was an English writer best-known for her unconventional approaches to form as well as her trailblazing essays on artistic and literary subjects. After a series of deaths in her family, she moved to Bloomsbury, the bohemian London neighborhood that subsequently became synonymous with her literary circle. Woolf founded a successful publishing company with her husband and was well known for her literary reviews; however, it was her novels, such as Mrs. Dalloway (1925) and To the Lighthouse (1927) that solidified her as a luminary in the world of modernist literature.
