Wnt genes code for a family of secreted glycoproteins which fulfil important functions during the development of vertebrates and invertebrates. Michael Kühl ist in Norddeutschland aufgewachsen, wo er auch studiert hat. Als Ingenieur hat er in Süddeutschland, den USA, Südafrika und Singapur gearbeitet. Das Interesse an fernen Ländern spielte immer eine zentrale Rolle in seinem Leben. 2004-2007 lebte er mit seiner Frau in Südafrika.
