Bud and his partner Phil De Lancey had just escaped Mexico, where revolutionaries had tried to get their treasure and, failing that, had tried to get them. Kruger assured them that they would be going to a different region that was still peaceful and just over fifty miles from the border. The Americanized town of Fortuna hadn't been touched by the revolution yet. Lured by the prospect of great riches, Phil talked Bud into the venture. Kruger went over maps with them, telling them to memorize all the details, then destroying the papers. He told them to prospect around for a while until they met a man named Cruz Mendez, who would take them to the location of the Eagle Tail Mine. After that, it was up to them to establish the title to it, but under no circumstances were they to trust Cipriano Aragon, who had stolen the mine from Kruger years ago. Confident that they will be able to meet whatever challenges come their way, the two friends set out the next day. But this venture will have more dangers than they expect . . .
