The book centres on Freud's "Fragment of an Analysis of a Case of Hysteria", the first major psychoanalytic case history, called the Case of Dora.
In the first part, the author traces some of the major lines in the history of the reception accorded to this case history and establishes her own interpretative approach. In the second part, she undertakes a detailed re-interpretation of the Dora case history and the transference processes generated within. The third part situates the Dora case in the interpretative context of the mosaic of the early writings constituting the method and theory of psychoanalysis. In the final section, remarks on the significance of fantasies about origins and original scene fantasies in adolescent development lead to a proposal for a radicalized understanding of transference.
