How will social media evolve in the next ten years? There are indications that the implementation of 5G networks will greatly increase the bandwidth available for digital communication activities. Moreover, the implementation of new social media, such as the famous Metavers by GAFAM, will require significant processing of online data, using users' personal data with impunity. How should they be regulated to prevent collateral damage to the reputation and control of users, and to the mental health of young people and the more fragile?What energy balance can we make of the excessive use of social networks? It is true that digital technology, by working in the virtual world, makes it possible to dematerialize a large part of human activities, which makes it possible to offer all these services at lower cost. But this obvious dematerialization will be followed by a new materiality that translates into a new and significant energy and electricity bill.
