This book is based on the Special Policy Study on Global Ocean Governance and Ecological Civilization commissioned by the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED). The book scrutinizes China's successful experiences, approaches and needs in building an ecological civilization in management and utilization of living marine resources. The book provides a global landscape analysis of living marine resources, outlining the current status, existing management approaches, challenges, and needs. With the growing threats posed by climate change, the book includes a chapter devoted to the effects of climate on marine species. After highlighting and presenting key international cases from around the world, the book makes several recommendations to support China's next efforts to create an ecological civilization of living marine resources at home and abroad.

Hui Liu is a senior scientist at the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences. She has been working on aquaculture science and technology for over 30 years, leading research projects to develop rearing and management techniques for a wide variety of commercially important species. She also works for sustainable ocean conservation and governance in China, by addressing the environmental impact of aquaculture and other marine activities through science-based spatial planning and Nature-based Solutions. She received her Ph. D in Aquatic Biology at the Ocean University of China, and she was a recipient of the European Union Marie-Curie Fellowship. John Mimikakis serves as Vice President, Oceans, Environmental Defense Fund. He works to create healthy and productive fisheries, vibrant oceans, and prosperous fishing communities. He leads the Oceans Program’s mission to make sustainable fishing the norm at a global scale through our efforts in the U.S., Europe, Latin America and Asia. He has also fought to advance climate change legislation in the U.S. Congress. Prior to that, John served in various roles for nearly a decade in the U.S. House of Representatives. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin and his Bachelors of Science at Tulane University, and is a former recipient of the American Chemical Society’s Congressional Science Fellowship.
