The branch of science which applies the principles of anthropology in a legal environment is known as forensic anthropology. It focuses on the study of human skeletons and its remain which may be decomposed, mutilated or burned in order to establish the identity of the deceased. Forensic anthropology makes use of markers present on a human skeleton to determine the various characteristic features of the demised adult as well as minor. These include determination of sex, stature, age and ancestry. The field of forensic anthropology can be sub-divided into forensic archaeology and forensic taphonomy. Forensic archaeology focuses on the techniques related to the excavation of remains ensuring that the evidence present on bones is not damaged during the process. Forenssic taphonomy deals with the postmortem changes occurring in human remains due to the effects of soil, water, plants and animals. This book is compiled in such a manner, that it will provide in-depth knowledge about the theory and practice of forensic anthropology.
