Dentistry is the branch of medicine which is concerned with the study of disorders, diseases and conditions of the oral cavity, oral mucosa, and related structures and tissues in the maxillofacial area. It also deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of these diseases. Dentistry is not only limited to the teeth, it also encompasses aspects of craniofacial complex such as temporomandibular joint and other lymphatic, muscular, vascular nervous and anatomical structures. Oral diseases which are treated within this branch of medicine are dental carries and periodontal disease. These can be treated through the extraction or surgical removal of teeth, restoration of teeth, endodontic root canal treatment, scaling and root planing.
