Expériences impériales
Dès le milieu du XXe siècle, le concept d'empire fut utilisé par les historiens comme instrument d'analyse des formations politiques qui se constituèrent dans la péninsule Ibérique et au Maghreb au Moyen Âge. Dans une perspective nationaliste, l'« idée impériale » était alors conçue comme un projet cohérent et unitaire, une émanation de la conscience que partageaient les peuples de former une unité « hispanique » ou « maghrébine ». Après avoir été marginalisée par les études sur la genèse de l'État moderne, l'histoire des empires opère aujourd'hui un retour en force, fondé sur un profond renouvellement théorique et méthodologique. Tout en menant un travail de déconstruction des grands récits impériaux, les chercheurs conçoivent désormais les empires comme des entités politiques instables, hybrides et éminemment pragmatiques. En proposant une approche pluridisciplinaire, cet ouvrage les aborde comme des expériences politiques, en s'interrogeant sur ce qui fait empire et sur la mise en évidence de cultures impériales, à la fois diverses et connectées, irréductibles à un modèle unique.
From the mid-twentieth century, the concept of empire was used by historians as an instrument of analysis of the political formations that were formed in the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghreb in the Middle Ages. In a nationalist perspective, the « imperial idea » was then conceived as a coherent and unitary project, emanating from the shared consciousness of the peoples to form a « Hispanic » or « Maghrebian » unity. After it had been marginalized by studies on the genesis of the modern State, imperial history is now making a strong comeback, based on a significant theoretical and methodological renewal. While deconstructing imperial narratives, researchers now consider empires as unstable, hybrid and eminently pragmatic political entities. In this book, based on a multidisciplinary approach, they are considered as political experiments, questioning what makes an empire and highlighting imperial cultures, both diverse and connected, irreducible to a single model.
