Der Begriff "Sanctuary" bedeutet im Englischen nicht nur Heiligtum oder Kultraum, sondern auch Asyl und Zufluchtsort. Die Villa Aurora in Los Angeles wurde 1943 ein solcher Zufluchtsort für Marta und Lion Feuchtwanger und präsentiert anlässlich ihres 25.Geburtstages als Künstlerresidenz Reflexionen von Schrifsteller·innen und bildenden Künstler·innen zu Sanctuaries und Hermitagen. Neben neuen Essays und Gedichten ehemaliger Stipendiat·innen enthält die Publikation auch literaturwissenschaftliche Beiträge zur Literatur des Exils sowie Ausstellungsansichten und Werktexte der von Nana Bahlmann kuratierten Ausstellung all the lonely people. Sie greift die jahrtausendealte Tradition des Eremitentums auf und zeigt vor dem Hintergrund der Corona-Pandemie künstlerische Darstellungen von Einsamkeit, Melancholie und Sehnsucht sowie von physischem und mentalem Rückzug. In 1943, the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles became just such a refuge for Marta and Lion Feuchtwanger, and to mark its twenty-fifth anniversary as an artist residence, the Villa is presenting reflections by writers and visual artists on sanctuaries and hermitages. In addition to new essays and poems by former fellows, the publication also includes literary essays on the literature of exile as well as exhibition views and texts from all the lonely people, curated by Nana Bahlmann. The book examines the millennia-old tradition of hermitism and, against the backdrop of the Covid pandemic, offers up artistic depictions of loneliness, melancholy, and longing as well as physical and mental withdrawal.
