Since its original appearance in 1949, Irving A. Leonard's pioneering Books of the Brave has endured as the classic account of the introduction of literary culture to the Spanish New World. Rolena Adorno is Sterling Professor of Spanish at Yale University. She is the author of The Polemics of Possession in Spanish American Narrative and coeditor of Transatlantic Encounters: Europeans and Andeans in the Sixteenth Century.
