Ella Maillart avait la passion de la voile. Elle fut d'ailleurs la seule femme - et la plus jeune compétitrice - à barrer un monotype pour la Suisse aux jeux Olympiques de Paris en 1924. Elle raconte ici ses premières envies de liberté sur les mers, du lac Léman à la Bretagne, de la traversée de l'Atlantique à l'Angleterre, sans autre but que la vie sur l'eau et la sensation du vent. Peu après, répondant à l'appel d'autres immensités, Ella Maillart débutera ses fameux périples à travers la Russie des Soviets, puis l'Asie centrale...
