Canons 368 and 369 have two important references to the Council documents: in the first is transcribed the expression of LG 23: "in which and from which there is one and the same Catholic Church"; in the second is the definition of diocese given by CD 21. From the reading, therefore, of the Council documents mentioned above, it has emerged that the particular notion is not to be considered in opposition to that of universal, since, according to the documents in question, these are two inseparable and simultaneous dimensions in occurring in one place of the one Church of Christ. In fact, between the two dimensions, particular and universal, there exists a sort of osmosis, according to which the universal Church finds its concrete existence in each particular Church, in which it is truly present; while each particular Church is formed in the image of the universal Church, with which it lives an intense communion.
