Cette première traduction dans une langue tierce de Poèmes et Dessins comporte deux parties : le fac-similé intégral de la seconde et ultime édition réalisée par Josef Albers en 1961, dans lequel la traduction française s'agence selon une transposition graphique en correspondance avec les dessins ; puis un appendice rassemble un choix de poèmes épars, suivi d'un appareil critique éclairant le contexte de ce projet littéraire et artistique unique dans l'oeuvre d'Albers.
Figure incontournable de la peinture abstraite, membre du Bauhaus exilé aux États-Unis, enseignant au Black Mountain College puis à Yale, Josef Albers (1888-1976) fut un praticien, professeur et théoricien majeur de l'interaction des couleurs et des formes, inspirateur des avant-gardes américaines et de l'art optique. Il autorisait pour la première fois avec Poèmes et Dessins la publication d'un recueil de ses poèmes, et avait choisi pour les accompagner des dessins issus de la série Constellations structurales, qui n'avaient encore jamais été présentés comme un ensemble.
On retrouve dans les vers d'Albers la même économie de moyens, la même simplicité d'énonciation et l'expressivité profonde qui sont à l'oeuvre dans ses tableaux. This first French edition of Poems and Drawings, the first to appear in a language other than the original German and English, stands in two parts : the complete facsimile of the second and final edition made by Josef Albers in 1961, but with French translations laid out in the spirit of the drawings ; then an appendix that presents various poems by Albers, followed by a critical commentary that contextualizes Poems and Drawings as a unique literary and artistic work among Albers's wide-ranging output.
Seminal figure in modem art, Bauhaus master exiled in the United States and teacher at Black Mountain College then Yale, Josef Albers (1888-1976) was a major painter, educator, and explorer of the interaction of color and form. His influence upon modem art and his training of a generation of American artists is widely acknowledged. With Poems and Drawings, he authorized the publication of a collection of his poems for the first time, and chose to accompany them with drawings from the Structural Constellations series, which had never before been presented as a set.
We find in Albers's verses the same economy of means, the same simplicity of enunciation and deep expressiveness that are at work in his art. In the poems, Albers creates combinations of parallel and complementary forms with deceptive clarity and precision, which eventually reveal their multiple meanings, each Word having the power to bring out its opposite, just as his drawings have the magical ability to reverse their depth indefinitely in multiple directions.
