Deux années sur le gaillard d'avant

R.H. Dana (1815-1882) venait de commencer son droit à Harvard quand un mal mystérieux l'obligea à interrompre ses études. Afin de se guérir, ce jeune patricien de la Nouvelle-Angleterre décida de changer radicalement son mode de vie et s'engagea comme simple matelot sur un voilier de commerce à destination de la Californie pour un voyage de deux ans, en passant par le cap Horn.
Le récit de cette expérience de jeunesse qu'il rédigea peu après son retour devait rester l'un des grands classiques de la littérature américaine du XIX^e siècle ; Dana y a développé avec une rare puissance descriptive quelques-uns des thèmes majeurs qui devaient ensuite inspirer son cadet Herman Melville, le voyage initiatique, la lutte contre les éléments, le conflit de la culture et de la nature, l'ambiguïté de la vie primitive dont la trompeuse innocence recèle un piège où le narrateur manque de s'engloutir.
Salué comme un chef-d'oeuvre dès sa parution en 1840, Deux Années sur le gaillard d'avant a aussitôt connu un prodigieux succès (à l'époque, seuls les nouveaux romans de Dickens jouissaient d'une popularité comparable) et, dans sa version originale, il n'a jamais cessé d'être réimprimé depuis.
En France, un siècle et demi plus tard, il était temps de le découvrir enfin.
