Das Haus der Statistik (HdS) wurde Ende der 1960er-Jahre von einem Architektenkollektiv der DDR am östlichen Rand des Alexanderplatzes in Berlin erbaut. Der Abbruch des riesigen Bürokomplexes stand zwar schon lange fest, aber innerhalb weniger Jahre konnte die Allianz bedrohter Berliner Atelierhäuser dem riesigen Bürokomplex neues Leben einhauchen. Heute ist das HdS ein einzigartiges Modellprojekt: Verkauf und Demolierung konnten verhindert werden, und auf rund 100 000 Quadratmeter Fläche entsteht Raum für Kultur, Soziales und Bildung, bezahlbares Wohnen, ein neues Rathaus für Berlin-Mitte und mehr.
Von Mai bis Dezember 2019 untersucht das Kunstprojekt STATISTA als eine der vielen Pioniernutzungen im HdS, wie eine am Gemeinwohl orientierte Zusammenarbeit im Bereich der Stadtentwicklung funktionieren kann. Das Buch macht die Geschehnisse rund um das HdS zugänglich - sodass sich junge Kunstschaffende aus aller Welt zu vergleichbaren Schritten ermächtigt fühlen.
