Dans ce Mémoire, je reprends le problème d'encke. Je démontre que la règle de Gräffe donne immédiatement et sans nouveau calcul les racines imaginaires, comme les racines réelles; que la méthode s'applique sans modification au cas des racines d'égal module. On verra même que ma démonstration embrasse le cas non abordé jusqu'ici oii l'équation proposée a ses coefficients imaginaires. Tous ces résultats sont obtenus d'un seul coup par un théorème fondamental sur la fragmentation de l'équation.
