Pergamon liegt in Kleinasien, unweit der Westküste, 28 Kilometer landeinwärts gegenüber der Insel Lesbos; es ist ungefähr gleich weit entfernt nach Süden hin von Smyrna, nach Norden hin von Troja. Die trojanische Akropolis, auf welcher Schliemann grub, heißt in der Sage ebenfalls Pergamon, die Burgen, und ist nicht zu ver wechseln mit unserem Pergamon, der Königsstadt, in welcher von der Mitte des dritten Jahrhunderts bis zum Jahre 1 33 v. Chr. Das Geschlecht der Attaliden herrschte.
