En 1888, Robert Louis Stevenson et sa femme décident de partir à la découverte des mers du Sud. À l'époque, celles-ci n'ont rien des lieux paradisiaques aujourd'hui vantés par les brochures touristiques. Mais l'écrivain ne se lassait pas de relire les récits de Melville, et puis son emphysème pulmonaire lui interdisait désormais un séjour prolongé en Écosse, tout comme cette société
victorienne qui l'étouffait de plus en plus. Le voyage durera deux ans, jusqu'à ce que la Janet Nicholl jette l'ancre aux îles Samoa. Stevenson y mourra prématurément en 1894, non sans avoir vécu dans ce lieu hors du temps un véritable éblouissement.
