Cela posé, soient d'abord deux facteurs a, b, on a évidemment P, 2, savoir: ab, ba prenons un troisième facteur c on peut le combiner comme multiplicateur, ou multipücande avec ab en tièrement effectué, ce qui donne deux manières, cab, abc ou bien encore faire intervenir 0 pendant la multiplication ainsi, ac b, ca x b, a bc, a cb, ceçqui donne quatre manières, en tout six manières; raisonnant de même sur ba, on voit que l'on a Ps 12 2. 6; prenons un quatrième facteur d, et combinons-ie avec le produit abc d'abord entièrement effectué, on obtient deux ma nières dabc, abcd ensuite pendant l'opération, abo exige deux multiplications; en introduisant d pendant la première, celle de a par bc, on obtient quatre manières: ad. Bc, da. Bc, a, dôo, a. Bad, et autant pendant la seconde multiplication, celle de ab par c en tout dix manières. On en dit autant d'un produit quel conque, d'où P4 =120 6. 10; on trouverait de même Ps 2. 6. 10. 14; et ainsi de suite.
