Arab at, a celebrated mountain Of western Asia, subdivided into 2 peaks, Great Ararat on the N. W. And Little Ararat on the S. E., whose bases blend, while their summits are nearly 7 miles a art. The summit Of Great Ararat lies in t. 89° 42' N., long. 48° 88' E., and is feet above the sea level, and feet above its base. At a point 8 miles below its summit downward it is constantly covered with snow and ice. Little Ararat rises feet above the sea level, and feet above the plain on which it stands, and is free from snow and ice in September and October. The 2 mountains are Of volcanic character, an erup tion having taken place from them as late as July, 1840. The apex Of Great Ararat was visited on Oct. 9, 1829. Ararat is the central point Of the dividing lines Of the division Of Armenia, between Russia, Turkey, and Persia.
