In Israel, come in tutt'i popoli che hanno avuto una lettera tura Spontanea, la poesia ha preceduto la prosa. La poesia è stata la compagna fedele del popolo di Dio in tutte le fasi della sua storia fortunosa. Noi non conosciamo, pur troppo, la letteratura poetica d' Israel che in modo frammentario; perché quel tanto che della letteratura ebraica anterioreell' era cristiana è giunto fino a noi, è tutto nell'antico Testamento; il resto è perduto. È chiaro quindi che i giudizi che si esprimono su cotesta poesia e i raffronti che se ne fanno con altre letterature non possono avere che un valore molto relativo.
