Der Zweck dieses Buches ist nach dem Gesa@en von selbst klar; in erster Linie soll die Lektüre der Elegiker auf der Schule dadurch gefördert werden, da sie es verdienen, mehr als bisher gelesen zu werden; ferner sollen schwierige Stellen dem Schüler und auch dem Lehrer erklärt werden, da es nicht wohl möglich ist, dafs sich jeder eingehender mit diesen Dichtern beschäftigt hat.
