En 1146, Rogerio, Rey de las Dos Sicilias, llevó de la Grecia, a donde entró vencedor, huevecillos de gu sano de seda, y obligó a los prisioneros a que ensena sen a sus súbditos la manera de criar las larvas y de utilizar el hilo. De la Sicilia se extendió esta indus tria poco a poco, a Calabria y otras partes de la Italia.
