It is commonly (aid that the life of a good writer is beft read in his works, which can fcarce fail to receive a peculiar ti néiure from his temper, manners, and ha bits the difiinguilhing character of his mind, his tu ling pa¿ion, at leali, will there appear undilguifcd. But however jolt this obl'ervation may be, and altho' we might fafcly relt Mr. Thoml'on's fame as a good man, as well as a man of genius, on this fole footing, yet the delire which the public always ibewa of being more particularly acquainted with the hiftory of an eminent author ought not to be difappointed, as it proceeds not from mere curiolity, but chie¿y from af lcétion and gratitude to thole by whom they have been entertained and inllméted.
