Suivant l'usage adopté par les ingénieurs, nous dirons que n et t sont respectivement les fatigues normales et les fatigues tangentielles sur trois éléments plans, rectangulaires entre eux avant déformation, menés au point A. D'après la convention qui vient d'être faite, un élément est soumis à la compression ou à la traction, selon que la fatigue normale sur cet élément est positive ou négative.
