The parents of Jane Hawkins (my mother's maiden name) were warmly attached to the Established Church; and, according to the light they had, they brought up their children agreeable to its doc trines; but their religious views were exceedingly circumscribed; nor were they singular in this res pect; for, at that period, spiritual darkness nearly covered what was even then called, this Christian land. - The gospel lightfre-kindled at the reformation, had nearly dwindled into obscurity, and blind leaders of the blind were too fre quently the guides of the people.
