Theatre has a funny way of getting to the heart of who we are now and - particularly in the case of Connections - who we are going to be. Drawing together the work of nine leading playwrights, National Theatre Connections 2018 features work by some of the most exciting contemporary playwrights. Gathered together in one volume, the plays offer young performers an engaging selection of material to perform, read or study.From friends building bridges and siblings breaking down walls; girls making their voice heard and boys searching for home; and not forgetting a band of unlikely action heroes taking control of the weather.The anthology contains nine play scripts along with imaginative production notes and exercises, as well as a short introduction to the writing process for the tenth Connections play [ BLANK ] by Alice Birch. National Theatre Connections is an annual festival which brings new plays for young people to schools and youth theatres across the UK and Ireland. Commissioning exciting work from leading playwrights, the festival exposes actors aged 13-19 to the world of professional theatre-making, giving them full control of a theatrical production - from costume and set design to stage management and marketing campaigns. NT Connections have published over 150 original plays and regularly works with 500 theatre companies and 10,000 young people each year.>

Brad Birch's theatre work includes Black Mountain for Paines Plough, Theatr Clwyd and the Orange Tree; This Must be the Place for Poleroid at the VAULT Festival; The Brink at the Orange Tree; The Endless Ocean at the RWCMD; Tender Bolus at the Royal Exchange and Schauspielhaus, Hamburg; Gardening for the Unfulfilled and Alienated for Undeb at the Edinburgh Festival; Soap Opera, Where the Shot Rabbits Lay and Permafrost at the Royal Court; Even Stillness Breathes Softly Against a Brick Wall at Soho Theatre; Light Arrested Between the Curtain and the Glass at Sherman Cymru. He won the Pick of the Year Award at the VAULT festival in 2017, the Harold Pinter Commission in 2016 and the Fringe First Award in 2013. He is currently under commission at the Royal Shakespeare Company and Royal Court. Black Mountain is on tour in 2017/18.Chinonyerem Odimba’s 30 minute play AMONGST THE REEDS, commissioned by Clean Break,opened at The Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh as part of the Edinburgh Festival 2016, followed by a run at The Yard Theatre, London in September 2016.
Her play WILD IS DE WIND was shortlisted for the 2015 Bruntwood Prize, and she was a member of NW6, an invited group of writers working on a seed commission with the Tricycle Theatre over the course of a year. Chino is also currently Writer on Attachment at Clean Break Theatre, London where she wrote a 10 minute monologue as part of a series of monologues with Laura Lomas, Deborah Bruce, Theresa Ikoko and Ursula Rani Sarma. JOANNE was produced for the Latitude Festival and Soho Theatre, performed by Tanya Moodie.
She was invited by the Royal Court to take part in a writers group culminating in a Live Lunch performance, for which she wrote THROUGH WATER AND STARS, directed by Lucy Morrison.
Chino’s previous work includes THE BIRD WOMAN OF LEWISHAM, a short play produced as part of the Story Project 2015 and performed at the Arcola Theatre, and HIS NAME IS ISHMAEL, a play commissioned when she was a writer on attachment at the Bristol Old Vic.
Alice Birch's previous work at the Royal Court includes Peckham: The Soap Opera and Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again (RSC). That same year, she won a scholarship to study dramatic writing as part of the International Summer School at the Universität der Künste, Berlin. In 2014, COOLATULLY won the Papatango New Writing Prize and was produced at the Finborough Theatre and published by Nick Hern Books. DELUGE won the 2014 Eamon Keane Full-Length Play Award, was subsequently produced at Hampstead Downstairs in 2015 and also published by Nick Hern Books. In 2015 Fiona received a 7 week attachment at the National Theatre Studio and was the recipient of the inaugural 2015/16 Phelim Donlon Playwright’s Bursary and Residency Award from the Irish Theatre Institute in association with the Tyrone Guthrie Centre. Her latest play, Fury, was runner up for the Verity Bargate Award 2015, and subsequently won the Soho Young Writer’s Award and had its run extended at Soho theatre due to popular demand, it also received an Offie nomination for ‘Best New Play’.Natalie Mitchell writes for television, theatre and radio. She is currently developing original TV projects with Red Planet Pictures and The Forge and has written a new play for next year's Connections season at the National Theatre. She is a regular writer on EASTENDERS.
In 2007, her first play CAN’T STAND ME NOW was presented as part of the Royal Court Young Writer’s Festival, which led to her representing England at the World Interplay Young Writer’s Festival. In 2010 Natalie was one of nine writers’ on the Royal Court’s ‘Supergroup’, and in 2012 she was on the final BBC Writer Academy, leading to her writing across Continuing Drama in 2013. She continues to write regularly for EASTENDERS and contributes to storylines.
Natalie’s radio plays include PROUD for Radio 3’s the Wire and afternoon play THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD for radio 4. She is currently under commission to radio 4. Her play for young audiences CRAWLING IN THE DARK was performed at the Almeida Theatre in 2011, and more recently her play for teenagers, GERM FREE ADOLESCENT toured community venues in Kent. Her theatre work has also been presented at the Royal Court, Soho, Hampstead and Finborough Theatres.
Critics Circle Award 2014 for Most Promising Playwright. Shortlisted for the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Most Promising Playwright, the Writers Guild of Great Britain 2014 award for Best Play and the Best New Play Award at the Off West End Theatre Awards 2014.
