Some apology may also be due to the reader, for the occa sioual introduction of the author's personal knowledge of cer tain occurrences; which he fears may appear like egotism; but which has arisen from a sense of the necessity of verifying or elucidating, as far as practicable, what was to be brought into view, characterizing the course of events.
The first volume will carry the history to about the year 1840.
