Aram, eugene, an English scholar, born in 1704 at Ramsgill, in Yorkshire, tried for mur der at York, Aug. 8, 1759, found guilty, and executed within 8 days after the trial. The name of his victim was Daniel Clark, a shoe maker of Knaresborough, and the motive of the murder was said to have been plunder. This trial created as great a. Sensation in Old England, as the trial of Dr. Webster created in New England. Eugene Aram enioyed a remarkable reputation for extensive se olarship, acquired under the greatest difficulties, his father having been a poor gardener, and no advantages 0 study and education having been afforded to him but those which he secured for himself by his indefatigable industry, and unswerving per severance. After his marriage, he established himself as a schoolmaster in his native district of N etherdale. In 1734 he removed his school to Knaresborough, where he remained till l745s when he became implicated in a robbery committed by Clark, and although discharged for want of evidence, he thought it best to leave the little place, and proceeded to London.
