It has been common among scholars to seek the source of Storm's lyric gifts in Stifter and Morike. There is, however, a very great difference between Stifter's realistic nature sense and plastic description and Storm's subjective treatment of the' same, whereby the deep lyric bent in all of his characters, whether of high or low estate, is revealed. There is nothing finer in German literature than the nature touches which Storm so deftly and delicately inworks as a background for his theme in order to depict the sudden and subtle soul changes in his characters. With Morike and Eichendorff there is more a kinship of spirit than a distinct in¿uence. Like Goethe's lyrics, each of Storm's poems is simply an event in his life, a state of soul embodied in poetic form. A love of nature and of home, of the bitter-sweet of love, of the romantic retrospective dream of a lost age or youth, - these are the themes of his verse and tales.0!
