Quoique cette question paraisse décidée, elle est d'une si haute importance, qu'il serait je crois fort à désirer qu'on la pût discuter et approfondir. Je ne l'envisagerai point dans toute son étendue; mais j'essaierai de la traiter dans ce premier volume, en ce qui concerne l'histoire. Réduite à ce seul article, elle embrasse encore beaucoup de détails; et peut - être ne réussirai - je qu a montrer combien elle est compliquée. Voici les motifs qui m'ont engagé dans ce travail.
