The political and social state of Hungary has been incidentally mentioned in several chapters, as the subjects to which they respectively relate have ren dered it expedient to do so; and in the one on In ternal Policy will be found a general outline of the existing constitution. Having studied it both in its theory and its practice, with an interest proportioned to its singularity, during a residence in the country for several months, at a period when the Diet was sitting, I regret that it has been impossible for me, in a work like the present, to render a full and just account of institutions so peculiar both in their structure and their bearings. If my health should allow me, I may possibly be tempted to submit here after to the public a separate essay on that distinct subject.
