Ernst completed the course in the Hamburg Normal School and for eighteen years followed in Hamburg the double calling of public-school teacher and author. In 1887 the author married Helmy Scharge, a woman of fine poetic feeling, and his conjugal happiness is mirrored in many idyls of married life in his stories and poems.
Otto Ernst was a founder of the Hamburg Literary Club, one of the leading societies of its kind in Germany, and his in¿uence as a member of it has for years been felt far beyond the limits of his own city.
