Flores hermafroditas, actinomorfas. Sépalos 4 - 5, de estivacion valvada o imbricada. Pétalos 4 - 5, comunmente mas cortos que los sépalos, o ningunos. Estambres del doble, rara vez del mis mo número de los pétalos; o numerosos. Ovario súpero, de 2 -3 5) hojas carpelares, bilocular, con oo óvulos biseriados en cada celdilla. Fruto una cápsula comunmente bilocular. Semillas nu merosas, con el embrion rodeado por el endospermio. - Árboles o arbustos con las hojas verticiladas u opuestas; las estipulas a veces soldadas por pares. Flores pequeñas, en inñorescencias racimosa5. - Ig jéneros principalmente del hemisferio austral.
