The circumstances of the case were brie¿y these: on the death of Saul, Ishbosheth his son became his successor, and was raised to the throne of his father. The kingdom, it required all the wisdom, bravery, and in¿uence of Abner, who was now at the head of the army in the field, and the council In the cabinet, to keep the tottering crown on his head, and; to save, even for a time, this falling and ill-fated family. During this period of struggle and con¿ict between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner may very naturally be considered as David's most potent enemy. But a circumstance now occurred which made him David's valuable and efficient friend. Unhappily for him self, Ishbosheth brought a grave charge, on a delicate su (verse 7) against his general; a charge which, whether true or in the present untoward circumstances of his affairs, it was unwise to.
