J'ai cru qu'il y avait place pour un tel livre, écrit pour ainsi dire sur les marges des Essais et destiné a expliquer l'oeuvre par l'auteur, comme il s'est vu lui - même et aussi comme il est apparu à ses contemporains. Le lecteur dira si j'ai réussi et si mon ambition n'a pas été tr0p haute. A défaut d'autres mérites, ce livre aura celui de la sincérité, et, bien que le mot. De Montaigne ait trop souvent et parfois trop mal servi, j'ose dire ce qu'il disait des Essais c'est un livre de bonne foi.
