L' Ottavia di Kotzebue mi ha suggerita l'idea del melodramma che ora assoggetto al giudizio del colto Pubblico milanese. È un argomento misto di classico e di romantico che mi parve poter ofiire alla musica qualche prestigio di novità. D' alcune licenze storiche che mi son preso pel maggior interesse dell' azione domando indul genza. A quella la più ardita finse) d' aver con dotto Ottavia ad Alessandria, mi sia di scusa l' esempio dello stesso Kotzebue e della Girardin nella sua Cleopatra.
