Depuis les années 1980, le libéralisme économique et le laissez-faire marquent l'économie mondiale. Ces deux doctrines sont très voisines. Le laissez-faire bannit l'intervention publique dans les marchés, qu'il s'agisse des économies nationales ou des échanges internationaux. Le libéralisme économique est une politique mise en oeuvre par les États pour lever les entraves au marché là où elles existent et pour augmenter la part de l'entreprise privée dans l'économie.
