India has contributed superior goat germplasm for improvement of goats in South Asia and South-East Asia. Apart from the national scenario of India, the status of goat husbandry in J&K state needs no explanation. Be it pashmina or the chevon production the scope for goat husbandry in this state is quite bright. The focus then shifts to the preservation of elite germplasm, since urbanization has effected it badly. Over the last few years application of assisted reproduction technologies like in vitro embryo production through in vitro maturation, fertilization and culture of oocytes, establishment of oocyte banks have provide much needed impetus to the work which is being put in for the conservation of these elite breeds of goat. Follicular oocytes can be retrieved from the ovaries of those animals that are presented for slaughter in a way becoming the cheapest available source. The collected oocytes can be preserved for generations at subzero temperature.
