Ma. Thom an was born at Ednam, in the min of Roxburg/y, on the I 1th of September, in the year I 700. His father, minilier of that place, was but little known beyond the narrow circle of his co-prefbyters, and to a few gentlemen in the neighbourhood; but highly refpeéted by them, for his piety, and his diligence in the palloral duty as appeared afterwards in their kind ofiices to his widow and orphan family.
