Il désirait alors obtenir une chaire de mathématiques à l'université; mais comme l'université avait déjà deux professeurs en mathématiques et que le gouvernement ne le trouvait pas convenable d'en nommer un troisième, il resta sans place jusqu'en 1828, lors qu'on lui confers les fonctions de Mr. Hansteen pendant son absence dans un voyage en Sibérie. En septembre 1827 on le nomma membre de la société royale des sciences à Throndhjem.
